Iyad Naja is a lebanese designer who plays with the combination of modern and ancient beauty, mixing traditional arabic writing with more contemporary materials and processes, like concrete and polished cut metals.
I absolutely love the way the arabic script looks, as it imitates traditional islamic art, but still looks new and recent due to the materials used. I am unsure of whether he used solid metals of different colours, like copper or bronze, or if he used plated aluminium.
This kind of result is what I hope to achieve with my own work, a kind of marriage between old and new, taking something that is long loved and breathing new life into it. I’m interested in trying to cut out my designs and use metal or wood to create something that is both modern and loveable.
